05 2026-05 Lessons of the second May trip

Avoiding rain is important – plan your hiking trip around dry days.

Memorial Day weekend in Maine and NH is when the snow is just gone from all the major trails, bugs are just beginning to emerge, and leaves are just showed up this very week.

I was able to look up and find the lines of poetry that were pursuing me all the trip. It was Михаил Кульчицкий (1919—1943)

The lines were written in 1940 in his poem “Самое такое”:

Уже опять к границам сизым
составы тайные идут,
и коммунизм опять так близок —
как в девятнадцатом году.

It is unclear how and from where I can remember these lines.  Most likely they were quoted by Victor Suvorov in one of his books.
