Summary: a quick climb to route 17, jump on a bike and ride 8 mi under an unexpected unannounced rain down to Houghton where the car was waiting.
06:38 – wake up after additional 2.5H of sleet in an extra jacket and pants. The night was even colder, but two extra pieces of clothing added warmth, and I was able to sleep soundly during the last portion of the morning.
At 04:12 it was already light. It is cold now
Very academic breaking the camp, very organized and thoughtful.
08:08 – start marching up the trail towards the highway
08:41 – I am on route 17 – Height-of-the-Land. The last (less than mile) portion of AT that I skipped on 2 previous trips here is completed. Go get the bike out of the woods and hook up backpack to the back of the bike
09:13 start riding down the road under a steady rain that stared unannounced and unplanned. I am protecting the backpack with rain cover and myself with a bright yellow windbreaker. For the whole 8 miles down only 2 cars overtaken me in my direction.
09:44 – I arrived at the car. Of course, the rain is now ending.
10:03 – start driving home
10:58 – I got stuck at construction traffic on route 4. OTIS meeting at 11 was cancelled. The car vent is chirping but not creating any problems for me.
The beautiful small steps to return to civilization: turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on iPhone, collect wallet, keys and changes from secret places in the car, change dry socks,
11:12 – ODO 272.0 – Hannaford at Turner, ME – buy fruits, do Duolingo,
12:40 – 13:20 – email from OTIS, and I need to work. I found a good spot at Honda Service with a table and wi-fi. Easy, convenient, fast.
