Waiting for flight to Boston

Friday, August 29 – Wien   Next day on Friday, August 29 we had only one item on our to-do list.  We wanted to buy special local treat for our coworkers back in Boston.  We easily accomplished this in a local supermarket for 2.89€ per one bag of Mozart Balls.  In the airport the same bag sold for 12€. Car return was painless.  We drove 1,558.7 km in 11 days. Car rental turned out to be the most expensive item on our itinerary (over a $1000), since air travel was almost free. In Paris we had a layover and had to go through a security check one more time.  We had to…

Broken Link - Mozart

Thursday, August 28 – Graz Next day on Thursday, August 28 we depart from Graz for Vienna around 10AM.  Roads in Austria are toll free, but if you use highways, you have to purchase passenger-car vignette.  We already had this sticker attached to the inside of the front windshield, because we rent our car in Austria. Johann Strauss Johannes Brahms Franz Schubert   Around 1PM we entered Vienna proper.  We took Favoritten exit from the highway and relatively quickly found Wiener Zentralfriedhof or Vienna Central Cemetery.  It is located a little off the center, and it is inconvenient to visit without a car. Ludwig van Beethoven Death gives a new address…

Tuesday, August 26 – Venezia  Next day Tuesday, August 26 we planned our day tour in opposite direction.  From our hotel across the Ponte Scalzi towards universities, academies and through Ponte de l’Academia to see Piazza San Macro and see how far we can advance in a hot Italian August weather.     ^ A good Venician mask can greatly enhance your appearance < People lining up the streets to get into the catherdral are not shown Venezia – A Typical Traffic Jam >  By this time, we knew that shoes and water are two of your friends on a tour in a strange city.  And we’ve got both. Plus Venezia is a…

Pemigewasset Wilderness - 2010-09-05

I always looked at a vast green area on the New Hampshire White Mountain map and wondered, what is it in there?  It must be like a jungle in there.  No people, just quietness and tranquility and calm.  But I  could never come up with an itinerary to actually cross it.  By the time you reach it, it is already time to turn back to the car.  It was always calling for me to experience the loneliness and mystery of Pemigewasset Wilderness.  Finally, in September of 2010 I’ve answered the call of the wild. I am describing here one possible scenario to cross Pemigewasset Wilderness in White Mountains, New Hampshire, USA.  You…

Late Evening in Venezia

Padova to Venezia Next day Monday, August 25 we rejected the option to remain here at Padova and keep riding to Venezia on train every day.   We just drove remaining 30km to Venezia. Venezia is connected with mainland by a long plain bridge or connector.  Several such connectors are going parallel to each other for cars and trains. The parking that we found right on the bus terminal plaza cost us 24€ per day.  From travel guides I was expecting 18€.  We picked just the cameras and water and embarked on our conquest on Venezia. From all locations this one was the most exciting.  O boy, o boy!  Do I ever expect to…

New-Web-Area

Joy of Web Publishing Very early on I noticed that Web content is a very special type of content, and Web development is a very special type of development.  Everything you say and everything you design is immediately available not just to millions, but to an entire Earth population with electricity and Internet.  And that is amazing.   And that is a true lure of running a Web site. Your thoughts and ideas are buried deep inside your head, but with Internet these ideas can find their customer, and your thoughts can find their reader.  Your site is your creation.  It is another dimension of you. Answer Fundamental Questions What is your Angle?…

09-01 MO – Some magnesium fire please

09-01 07;29 Sun is just getting through the woods

Slow start.   Finally decided to break open my magnesium fire starter kit.  It was $12 at EMS, but it did not include the knife of metal strip to do the magnesium shavings.  I had to use my own knife.  I was struggling for about 40 minutes with the instructions, and dump kindling, and shavings again.  The sparks would fly, and fire would almost starts, but not really.  Finally, I had to go to plan number one:  dry paper and matches.  I have got my fire going, and then breakfast, and then completed taking down the camp.  I started walk back with a heavy (but light) backpack at 11:38. Around…

6:50AM - Rifugio Alimonta - 2580 m

Saturday, August 23 – Rifugio Alimonta (Gruppo di Brenta) Next day on Saturday, August 23 I opened my eyes at 6:40AM, and sun already appeared through the mountains. I climb down from my bunk and ventured outside to record this strange moon-like surface that we missed to photograph 4 year ago. After a very dull breakfast and final pay (72€ for food, shower and lodging for two) we started back out at 8AM. We saw a picture like this in our local library.   Now, we found the place.   Notice people on the other side of the ledge. First 4 hours we should be climbing up back to Vie Ferrate, going at…

08-31 16;08 Reliable cup holder

Last event yesterday links with the first event today.  Late last night I discovered that cheap charge wire for iPhone that I buy from China for $1 stopped working, and my phone have only 5% charge left.  Today, I found a twist of the wire and I was able to maintain it with a rubber band to allow the charging to resume.  Way cool!  And now, what should be my new policy toward cheap wires – always have a spare cheap wire to spare?   07:45 – Second morning in the woods – Seize the Day! 09:14 – Boiling water is a clean water 09:28 – Hot cereal with fruits and…
